Western Digital WD Elements Play
$152.99
Released August, 2010
The Pros:"Plug-and-play" design is true to advertisement - instantly recognized by most DVR models for direct drive streaming. Excellent energy conservation - power down after several minutes without use, boots up in less than 10 seconds when re-accessed. Users have full access to all internal storage space - preferred largely to similar models that are pre-loaded with a firmware partition that limits capacity.
The Cons:Seemingly design to only sit in a flat orientation - may disappoint long-time WD users who are familiar with the versatile placement of most products.
The Western Digital WD Elements Play is a basic media player for digital file formats. Files can be copied onto the built-in hard drive through the USB 2.0 connection, and output is supported both for DTS 2.0 digital surround sound and HDMI video at qualities up to full 1080p resolution.
The hard drive comes in 1 and 2 Terabyte capacities, and can play back a wide variety of video, photo, audio, playlist and subtitle file formats. A remote control is included that gives access to the system's on-screen menus as well as normal playback control.
