Samsung PN50C550

$1,300.00 Released February, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Great picture calibration controls for the price. Good black levels (a strength of plasma displays) - superior to all comparably priced LCD-based TVs. Great shadow detail.

The Cons:Lacking standard definition picture quality. Lacks intelligent Internet functionality. Remote is oversized (harder to use) and looks / feels like a toy.

The PN50C550 is a 50", 1080p plasma television, part of Samsung's mid-range 550 Series for 2010. It adds a fourth HDMI input to the PN50C540, as well as Wide Color Enhancer technology, which Samsung claims produces brighter blues and greens.

It is also a step up in design, featuring "Touch of Color" grey highlights. The two models are otherwise similar, both featuring a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, typical for plasma displays, which are known for reproducing deep blacks. Real Black Filter technology further enhances contrast in dark content by reducing the effect of light reflection, while 600Hz Subfield Motion enables an exceptional response time of .001 ms, virtually eliminating blur in fast-moving scenes. The PN50C550 cuts energy consumption significantly compared to the 2009 models and qualifies for Energy Star.
