Fencing masks are required protective equipment for practice and competition. Sabre masks are different than foil and epee masks in that there is no insulating coating on the mesh of the mask and there is conductive lame material on the bib of the mask. This is due to the fact that the head is target in sabre and requires the use of the conductive clothing (mask and lame) with the electronic scoring equipment in modern fencing.
