Gran Turismo 5

$60.00 Released March, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Phenomenal graphics. Meticulous attention to car detail. Huge number of cars.

The Cons:Weird progression system where a lot of the game starts of locked and gets gradually unlocked the more you play. Car damage has to be unlocked. Vast majority of cars are "standard" meaning much worse looking and no cockpit view. 800 out of 100 cars are standard.

Omar: Wow, this video for Forza Motorsport 4 just got leaked. I was a big fan of #forza_motorsport_3 and if this preview is true and the game can deliver these kind of graphics and experience... then ya. It'll be the best racing game ever. Sorry #gran_turismo_5 your time in the sun was all too short.

Omar: November 2010 NPD results are in (http://bit.ly/hxmV8F). Looks like #microsoft_xbox_360 is the big winner. Most likely boosted by #microsoft_kinect and #call_of_duty_black_ops it sold 1.37 million units which is the biggest November its ever had. Considering we're in the 5th year of the 360's life, that's pretty darn impressive.

#nintendo_wii did really well too, coming in at 1.27 million units. This bucks the trend that the Wii has been suffering from up until now where it was seeing massive year over year declines. If the Wii sees another big bump in december like in 2009, then it'll actually do really well for the year.

#sony_playstation_3_slim selling 530,000 is pretty sad. Particularly when #gran_turismo_5 comes out in the same month. Not sure what Sony can do at this point... focusing on Europe is probably the best strategy since the US is pretty much hopeless at this point.

And holy crap wow at Call of Duty!! In one month it has become the 7th best selling game of all time. That's crazy. I wonder if next year's installment will sell even more - it seems crazy that it can. But at the same time it seemed crazy that Black Ops would sell more than Modern Warfare 2, so who knows! Omar: #gran_turismo_5 After over 5 years in development, the ONE game that most PS3 diehard fans have been waiting for is finally releasing. Was it worth the wait? Does it redefine the racing game genre in the same way that Gran Turismo did when it first came out?

From the initial round of reviews it seems like the answer to the second question is a definitive "No".

The answer to the first question is dependent on what kind of person you are. If you're into racing sim games, then GT5 will undoubtedly be worth your money. The amount of content, features, excellent graphics, etc are easily worth the $60. However, for people that have a more casual interest in racing games, is it worth picking up? That seems like a much tougher question to answer.

The current Metacritic score after 12 reviews is 86 http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/gran-turismo-5/

It's been fascinating watching the story unfold. Hard core fans are loving the title, but some are working over time to defend its miscues from harsh online skeptics.

Personally, I don't think it's going to alter the course of the console wars and be the savior of the PS3 as many people were hoping. But if I had a PS3 I'd definitely pick this game up. Nov 24, 10
